42 - D&D Entertainment Co.

1636 Summitridge Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210

Originally, silent film director King Vidor's mansion, this magnificent mansion in Beverly Hills overlooked the valley below. Designed by Wallace Neff, the place came with an outdoor pool, guest quarters, live-in gardener and caretaker, numerous rooms, and a barn that would be later converted into a gaming space complete with a war gaming sand table. The mansion became the headquarters for TSR's Dungeons & Dragons Entertainment Co. and home of Gary Gygax from 1983 to 1984. Here Gary would produce the highly successful Saturday morning Dungeons & Dragons Cartoon and work diligently licensing and developing a number of properties. His chief focus however was creating a Dungeons & Dragons feature length film. To this end, he would work with many Hollywood writers and directors, including James and Bobby Goldman, Orson Welles, and John Boorman. Unfortunately, the film was unable to gain traction, despite having a manuscript by James Goldman as early as March of 1982. Ultimately, Gary returned to Lake Geneva to redress several areas of mismanagement and steer the company away from the looming rocks of financial ruin.
